Chess Boards

Chess boards are eight square by eight square checkerboards that are used as the playing field in the game of chess. Chess has long been a part of our culture and chess boards have been an integral part of the game since it was first created.  Chess boards traditionally have a black and white alternating pattern, although other colour combinations can be used. Entirely wooden chess boards often use a light wood and a dark wood layered in veneers to represent the black and white squares.

 

Chess boards can also be used to play a variety of other boards games, notably draughts, which is frequently played on 8x8 chess boards, although there are versions of the game that utilise larger boards.  There is also a number of other different games that make use of chess boards, many of which are variations on the traditional rules of chess.

 

Antique and highly ornate chess sets are often accompanies with similarly lavish and ostentatious chess boards. These antique sets and chess boards are often worth significant amounts of money and will rarely if ever be used to play a game of chess. There are many people who are interested in collecting chess sets and chess boards, some of whom own some highly collectable examples.
