Chess Pieces
Chess pieces are the essential playing piece in the game of chess. There are six different chess pieces, king, queen, rook, bishop, knight and pawn. A full chess set consists of thirty two chess pieces, sixteen white and sixteen black, making up the two opposing sides.
Chess pieces can be constructed from a variety of materials, although wood is traditional. In cheaper chess sets the chess pieces will often be constructed from plastic. Inexpensive chess pieces such as these are ideal for beginner players and children. However, significantly more expensive and ornate chess pieces are available many of which are constructed from valuable materials and crafted to a very high standard. Many people will collect these ornamental chess pieces, and they will rarely ever be used to play games of chess.
There are many examples of antique chess pieces that exist, and some of these are highly collectable, particularly those that are made from very valuable or fine materials. One very famous set of chess pieces is the Lewis Set which is a complete set of chess pieces from the 12th century that were discovered in 1831. These ancient chess pieces are made from walrus ivory and are currently displayed in the British Museum in London.
